Many babies begin their semi-solids with barley. There are many ways barley can be included in baby food. They make excellent filler for toddlers too. Barley can be mainly used in soups.

1. First Food for Babies (6 months)
Ingredients:
- 2 spoon of pearl barley.
- 1 cup of water.
Method of preparation:
- Wash the pearl barley under running water.
- Soak the barley in water for half an hour.
- Drain the water used for soaking. Add fresh water and blend. Make a smooth paste.
- In a different vessel, heat one glass of water.
- When the water begins to boil, add the blended barley paste and keep stirring.
- You cannot stop stirring as it will create lumps if you stop.
- It begins to thicken. Add water if needed to adjust the consistency.
- Boil for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Making a lump-free barley baby food is your responsibility. Serve when it is warm.

2. Barley with Yogurt
Prepare a barley smooth pap by boiling it in water as in the above recipe. Add little salt. Allow it to cool and then add little yogurt. This is a very tasty and healthy food for babies.
3. Spinach, Corn and Barley Soup for Toddlers
Recipe Ingredients:
- 2 spoon of pearl barley.
- Sliced onion (half bowl)
- Blended spinach (half bowl)
- Little sweet corn.
- One small garlic piece.
- Salt for taste.
- cumin seeds and coriander powder for additional flavor.
Prepare the spinach puree:
- Wash and clean fresh spinach leaves under running water.
- Heat a pan, add little butter or ghee and sauté the spinach leaves and garlic for few minutes.
- Transfer both spinach and garlic into a blending jar. Add some water and make a fine paste.
- Keep this aside now for the time being.
Prepare the barley:
- Now, in a bowl soak pearl barley in warm water for about 15 minutes.
- Drain the water used for soaking right before blending the barley.
- Add fresh water and blend barley into a fine paste.

4. Broccoli & Barley Soup Recipe For Babies/Toddlers
You will need: Broccoli, pearl barley, a small piece of garlic, few drops of soya sauce, salt and water to boil.
Method of preparing Broccoli & Barley Soup for Babies/Toddlers:
- Soak about a fistful of pearl barley in water for half an hour. Keep aside.
- Now, chop and clean broccoli under clean running water (this is a obvious step everyone does :-P)
- Heat water in a thick bottom pot vessel. When the water boils, add the tiny pieces of broccoli and let it boil.
- Now, drain the water in which barley was soaked.
- Add fresh water to the barley and make fine paste of the same. Also add a tiny piece of garlic while blending.
- Add the barley and garlic paste to the vessel in which broccoli is being boiled.
- Keep stirring without stopping.
- Boil for at least 10 minutes. Add water if needed to adjust the consistency.
- Add few drops of soya sauce. And also salt as per the taste.
- Boil for a couple of more minutes and switch the flame off.

5. Fried Capsicum in Toddler’s Soup Recipe:
Method of preparation:
- First of all soak pearl barley in a bowl of warm water and keep aside.
- Now, heat a spoon of cooking oil or butter in a pan.
- Add jeera seeds (this step is optional)
- Add garlic pieces and sauté for a minute.
- Then add capsicum pieces and tomato pieces.
- Sauté them well.
- Add coriander and cumin powder and heat for few more minutes.
- Transfer into a different bowl and set aside until the barley is ready.
By now you know how to cook barley. Yet, I will repeat here.
- Now bring back the soaked barley.
- Drain the water and wash the barley well.
- Add water or milk and blend to make a fine paste.
- Now heat a cup of water.
- When the water boils, add the barley paste you just made.
- Stir well without any intervals. Else you will see barley forming lumps in hot water.
- Boil for at least 10 minutes. Adjust the consistency by adding more water if needed.
- Add salt and the sauted capsicum and tomato to the barley.
- Let everything boil together for another one minute so that they blend well together.
